How to Remove a BMW X5 Air Spring

BMW X5 is an impressive SUV that’s a pleasure to drive on twisty roads. Its precise steering, well-weighted chassis and reassuring body control make it easy to navigate this sizeable chunk of metal through your favourite driving routes. However, if your X5’s suspension is faulty, the ride will become uncomfortable and the handling will suffer. This is why it is important to consider a performance upgrade to boost your vehicle’s handling capabilities.

One of the most popular upgrades is a set of BMW X5 coilovers. These will allow you to fine tune the height of the springs and adjust the damping. This will help to lower the center of gravity, improve handling and increase the overall performance of your car. Whether you are going to use your X5 for track days or simply enjoy spirited driving, it’s worth installing a set of BMW X5 coilovers.

The BMW X5 is one of the most advanced vehicles on the road. Its self-leveling air suspension has a lot of technology behind it that allows the SUV to keep its ride height adjusted no matter if it’s towing or not. However, this complex suspension system can be prone to malfunctions that can be very frustrating. For example, if you notice that your X5 isn’t maintaining its ride height or the air compressor is running frequently, it could be due to an issue with a rear height level sensor, a defective air compressor or poor air suspension springs.

An air suspension is made up of multiple components, including an air compressor, air lines, sensors, seals and the air springs themselves. These are all designed to work together as a single unit that’s capable of keeping the car at a constant ride height even when it’s carrying a heavy load. However, over time these parts can be susceptible to wear and tear due to ageing or damage. This is why it’s vital to check your BMW X5 air springs regularly and replace them as soon as you notice any signs of wear or tear.

There are several different types of BMW X5 air springs, some mounted on struts and others independently of the struts. To remove either type of BMW X5 air spring the procedure is similar and requires disabling the compressor and relieving air pressure. Once the air has been released from the suspension, the lower mount on the strut can be removed with a long, angled pick. The lower mounts usually have locking tabs that need to be compressed and the air line must be disconnected.

The next step is to remove the upper mount on the strut. This is usually done by turning the strut clockwise. Once the strut is turned, it should drop down and be free of the chassis and the lower control arm. Lastly, the new air spring can be installed onto the strut using the same procedure as with the replacement. Before installing the air spring make sure the rubber sealing ring is in good condition and that the air fitting is lined up properly with the hole.
