What Is a Hydraulic Shock Absorber?

A hydraulic shock absorber is a mechanical device that dampens vibration in the body of a vehicle. The mechanism consists of a cylinder filled with hydraulic oil and a piston which moves with the vertical movement of the wheel. When the spring is compressed or extended, the piston moves upward and the oil underneath has to pass through a narrow opening. This friction translates kinetic energy from the oil into heat, which brakes the piston movement and dampens the vibration in the body of the vehicle.

A hydraulic shock absorber S may be a single rod or a double rod design. In a double rod system, the piston rods 4 may stand on either the wheel or the body of the vehicle. It is therefore important to understand the exact dimensions and configurations of a hydraulic shock absorber. The hydraulic shock absorber must be selected carefully to prevent slack or excessive vibration, which may result in damage to the supporting structure.

The hydraulic shock absorber is designed to dampen the impact of the road on the vehicle as it travels. Its proper functioning prevents the vehicle from diving or squatting excessively. This in turn affects motion control and makes driving unsafe. In addition, a degraded hydraulic shock absorber may cause an uncomfortable ride for passengers. This is why it is crucial to regularly inspect your vehicle's shock absorber. It should be free from bubbles that indicate the presence of air inside the cylinder.

The hydraulic shock absorber works by producing pressure in a chamber. It adjusts resistance accordingly, based on the impact energy and fluid pressure. The resistance may be manually adjusted, preferably at a distance, but the device should be easy to operate and adjust. This way, the driver will be able to make changes according to the desired resistance. Once the cylinder is fully inflated, the vehicle will no longer feel uncomfortable. There are some additional features of a hydraulic shock absorber, but they should be considered in the selection process.

A hydraulic shock absorber has two types: single-tube and multi-tube. The former gives the car better handling while the latter produces a softer ride. However, they're not for every vehicle. Some vehicles are heavy enough to require a dual-tube shock absorber. This can lead to a deterioration in the performance of a standard shock absorber. This is why a remote-reservoir shock is a good option for heavy vehicles.

A twin-tube shock consists of an inner tube that doubles as the sole cylinder. It has a floating piston that keeps nitrogen gas separate from the hydraulic oil. The nitrogen gas inside the reserve tube helps reduce foaming, which is a common problem with twin-tube shock absorbers. The gas cell two-tube shock absorber represents the vast majority of vehicle suspensions. When comparing the two types, you should be able to see the differences and decide which type is the best one for your vehicle.
